Jochen Overlack

Since 2004 I have supported senior leaders and their teams on leadership effectiveness. Before,

I was with McKinsey & Company for almost 20 years. I enjoy learning and teaching: I had been

faculty member at University of St. Gallen, teaching leadership.

What I believe about coaching

More than once in my life I was invited to fundamentally transform: death of a loved person;

new roles in business; setbacks and failures in my career. In those painful phases my coach

helped me step out of a victim role, see myself, others and the opportunities and choices

provided to me from a different perspective. She helped me take responsibility and dare to

take actions which were impossible before. Her empathy, honesty, caring and independent

engagement helped me overcome desperate moments and grow. It was not always easy and

cosy – but she supported me. I know coaching from experience and I am willing to share this

experience with my clients.

What’s it like to work with me

I work with senior leaders on issues and in contexts that matter and are relevant to them. I

engage in different roles: (1) as a caring and curious coach, I support coachees’ self-reflection

and –awareness: we look at what they think, feel and interpret, and what and how they and

their bodies communicate and what they do; (2) as a thought partner / consultant (when

appropriate and having relevant expertise), I help structure issues and develop new ideas and

practical actions; (3) as a facilitator, I support coachee interact effectively with others in

relevant team environments and situations. My clients like my passion, my deep understanding

of their business/leadership context, my honest and caring challenge and support. They value

that I stay in touch with them – long after our coaching engagement has ended.

What coachees get out of working with me

Many of my clients see the phases of their biggest challenge as a rich source of renewal and a

foundation of new meaning and success. They see themselves and others in a different way –

and they consistently act differently than before. They are perceived as more thoughtful,

authentic, honest and effective leaders, who act more wisely and who lead others more

successfully with a different sense of purpose.
