I am an executive coach with nearly 30 years’ experience, working with senior clients in commercial and not for profit organizations, keenly interested in career issues; supervisor and trainer of other coaches. Fascinated by human psychology especially in matters of change, including why we resist the very changes we say we want to make. Compulsive writer, author/editor/commissioner; deliverer of Guardian Masterclasses on writing. Recent books include the 4th edition of Coaching Skills, Coaching with Personality Type and Building a Coaching Business.

I like working with: people who want to extend their range of influencing tactics; make the next step in career – or even step away from current career and create a new life; clients who wish to know how to lead and still be respectful of and liked by staff; increase personal impact without falling into the shouty bully trap. I work typically with the most senior people in organisations, Directors and Chief Executives. Client list includes BBC, Big Pharma companies, NHS, Universities, Banks, Consultancies, Media, Performing Arts. I have been a coach for nearly three decades and I am the author/editor of around 70 books, many on topics relevant to coaching and leadership.

Throughout my working life I have been intrigued and stimulated by seeing what a difference it can make if people achieve all of their potential. Even as a teenager I was probably doing a rudimentary form of coaching when friends worried about their spots or about how to complete their maths homework. Now, career issues are a special interest whether this is a single session for someone who has repeatedly been turned down after being shortlisted or a much longer programme for a client in mid-career who is asking themselves what they really want to do in the second half of their lives.

I am licensed to administer a range of psychometrics: they all have weaknesses, just as they all have strengths but I specially admire the MBTI, the FIRO-B and the 16PF. I am also an accredited mediator with CEDR.

As well as this I enjoy working over a period of years with clients in demanding leadership roles where so much is expected of them and where there are so few people with whom they can be vulnerable or get an honest mixture of support and challenge.

Writing is an important part of my life and I have written extensively about both coaching and career issues. My book Job Interview Success gives guidance on getting through an interview; I tacked the whole thorny topic of redundancy in Facing Redundancy: Surviving and Thriving. My book Coaching Skills is widely used all over the world to train coaches. Coaching with Personality Type: What Works and Building a Coaching Business: Ten Steps to Success are my two most recent books. I am Series Editor of the Coaching in Practice Series for the Open University Press/McGraw Hill
